1. What is Phonetics
It is concerned with describing the speech sounds that occur in the languages of the world, what these sounds are, how they fall into patterns, and how they change in different circumstances.

2. Articulators
This is how sounds are made:
Air from the lungs travels up the windpipe and into the larynx, at which point it must pass between the vocal cords.

As the airstream passes through, the vocal cords vibrate and therefore sounds are produced.
The air passages above the larynx are known as the

   
vocal tract (shown in the figure above).
The parts of the vocal tract (upper and lower) that can be used to form sounds are called articulators.
